Is it better to pursue MBA from India or abroad?

Posted Fri, 02 Mar 2012 07:40:15 -0000

Pursuing an MBA from abroad is not only beneficial for your careers, but also very convenient. Due to globalisation, liberalisation and privatisation, it has become feasible to pursue an MBA course from foreign universities especially in UK, Australia, USA and Canada

A foreign degree guarantees more exposure since students need to interact with fellow classmates and faculty to learn and evolve. Also they get to do internships with major corporate houses of international standards and get work experience in a variety of fields like finance, marketing, poetry, films, IT and other such artistic fields. The diversity in student body helps them develop a strong network across all countries.

A foreign MBA is sought-after by Asians, especially Indians, as the admission criteria to get admission in good MBA programme requires 3-4years of corporate experience and case studies which are based on real time experience for students to learn the art of management.

Talking about the benefits of pursuing MBAs from abroad in aspects besides career growth, Jayaram K Iyer, Professor, Marketing, Loyola Institute of Business Administration, told The Economic Times, "The students get lot more culturally diverse exposure that moulds them to be more global in perspective. Of course, they also become more patriotic realising the worth of India."

However, Iyer warns that most foreign universities promise a lot and deliver less. He also adds that most of these foreign universities can't find students in their own countries; it is business for them and no education can swerve from altruistic goals.

However experts and academicians argue his point and say that a MBA from renowned institute will help you to get a better pay package and designation when you come back to your country. Also studying from foreign university will give you global exposure, develops your personality, leadership skills and strategic thinking.

But should you pursue an MBA from Indian or a foreign institute is debatable. While a MBA from abroad may give you an international exposure, enhance your skills and give you better prospects in finding a job abroad, Indian B-school education is not far behind.

The quality of education at top-ranked Indian business schools is at par with some of the best in the world. Also it is cost-effective in compared to studying abroad.

Well, the answer to the question is simple. Whoever wants to do an MBA should have a good reason to do it & not just for the sake of an additional degree. In a integrated business environment we are in, its always good to do MBA in a school which has international students to give global exposure.

I agree with the fact that unless you are going for renowned school abroad only then it will fetch you the desired one. It doesnt mean that you go outside and get degree from any of the college. There are some internationally renowned schools which are well accepted here in india too. So, I would suggest get the pre research work done and go for only the best known in Asia-Pacific region.
